Plots Summary

Chapter 6 started with Jem and Dill asking permission from Atticus whether they could celebrate the last night with Dill. Dill and Jem is planning to sneak out to the Radley place and peek in their window. Scout (the narrator) walks them out, and they creep around the house peering in through the windows. However, they see a shadow of a man wearing a hat and quickly escape, overhearing short guns following behind them. They ran away under the fence next to the schoolyard. Because they are desperate in quickly running away, Jem’s pants gets stuck under the fence. He has to take it off in order to escape.
When Jem, Dill, and Scout came back many people are already crowding around confused about the shotgun. Miss Maudie inform them all that Mr. Nathan Radley, Boo’s bigger-cruel brother, shot the gun outside his yard and he knows it was a “white nigger” that intruded their place. Atticus then asks Jem whether are his pants. Dill, being a smart alleck, says that he won in strip poker and so Jem had to take off his pants. Everyone slowly go back to their houses and rest for the night. Later in the night, Jem sneaks out of the house to retrieve his pants from the Radley’s place.
